On a Friday night in Citi Field, everything was clicking for the Mets, Tong had a great debut, and the bats were on fire.
Following a 6 pitch first career inning for Tong, the Mets offense gave him plenty of run support. Juan Soto and Brandon Nimmo both hit home runs and powered the Mets to a 5-run inning.Â
After another 0 from Tong at the top of the 2nd, the Mets' offense gave even more run support this time, a 7-run inning. Alonso homered, Lindor and Taylor had RBI doubles, and Marte had an RBI single to give the Mets a 12-0 lead.
Things would be silent, and Tong would keep doing his thing and getting out of a couple of jams in the 3rd and 4th innings. But in the 5th, the Marlins would score 4 runs; however, only 1 of them would be earned for Tong due to errors from Lindor and Alonso. After the 5th, Tong would be pulled after 97 pitches.
The Marlins would add 5 more runs, and the Mets would add 6 more runs to close out the game.
In his MLB debut, Jonah Tong had an impressive night, pitching 5 innings, allowing 1 earned run, 6 hits, 6 strikeouts, and 0 walks, along with earning the win. After earning the win, it became the first time in Mets history that two pitchers got a win in their MLB Debut in the same season.
The Mets would win this beatdown 19-9.
