Ever since making his MLB debut on August 16th, Nolan McLean has been on point, pitching one of the best starts to a Mets career.
“I’ve always been a believer in myself. I am a confident guy, the hitters here are the best in the world, and I know that, but I also know that I have good stuff and, if I go out there and execute, I can get a lot of guys out,” said McLean
Against the Mariners on the 16th of August, McLean made his debut and shined like a diamond. In 5.1 innings of play, McLean allowed just 2 hits, walking 4, and striking out 8 while allowing 0 runs.
Coming off an impressive showing, McLean was back on the mound 6 days later, this time vs the Braves. Against a division rival on the road, the righty was once again on his ‘A’ game, but this time he went 7 innings. After 94 pitches, McLean gave up 2 runs, 4 hits, 0 walks, and 7 strikeouts. That impressive showing helped him achieve his second win in his second start.
The most recent outing for McLean was a huge game vs the Phillies at Citi Field, and the Mets looked to complete the sweep and close the gap in the NL East. Despite the high-stakes start, the youngster did not shine away. McLean went 8 innings, gave up 0 runs, 0 walks, 4 hits, and struck out 6. Those stats once again pulled the Mets to win the game, and McLean would earn his 3rd win in his 3rd career start, becoming the first Met to do so.
“It is an honor, and a testament to our hitters giving me a lot of confidence when I go out there and have 5 and 6-run leads every time,” said McLean after his 3rd win.
Along with having the first 3-0 start to a career in Mets history, McLean is the first pitcher a 3-0 record, 20+ innings, 20+ strikeouts, and a sub .200 opponent batting average in his 1st 3 starts since MLB Hall of Famer and 5x CY Young winner Randy Johnson.
McLean will look to continue his historic start to his career vs the Tigers on Tuesday in Detroit.
